Christchurch woman sentenced to three years for false quake damage claims

By: Newstalk ZB Staff | Latest Crime News | Tuesday October 23 2012 15:35

A Christchurch woman who tried to make false earthquake damage claims has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.

Marlanna Harris pleaded guilty earlier this month to two charges of obtaining by deception, as well as 13 charges of receiving stolen goods, dishonestly using documents and stealing a vehicle.

The 28-year-old was exposed when she put in the same photos of broken contents for separate earthquakes.

A review of claims by EQC found the double up, but by then Harris had already been paid over $16,000 for the first claim.

The other charges relate to various scams of vulnerable residents totalling over $43,000.
