Leniency request by runaway millionaire rejected

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Crime News | Friday August 24 2012 16:26

A Rotorua judge has flatly rejected a call for leniency for runaway millionaire Leo Gao.

Gao has been jailed for four years and seven months for the theft of nearly seven million dollars from Westpac.

His partner Kara Hurring got nine months home detention.

Gao's lawyer Ron Mansfield sought a reduced sentence because he'll struggle to do things like opening bank accounts and getting loans when he gets out of jail.

But, Judge Philip Cooper wasn't buying that at all.

"To put that another way, this would mean that you should get a reduction in the sentence because you committed the offences. Such a proposition only needs to be stated to be rejected."
