Forensic advances lead to cold case arrest

By: Malcolm Gayfer | Latest Crime News | Thursday August 9 2012 17:42

Advancements in forensics has led to an arrest in a cold case in the South Island.

Invercargill police have arrested a 30-year-old Christchurch man in relation to an indecent assault on a young girl in Te Anau.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bowman says its alleged that the man unlawfully entered a house in Te Anau in 2002 and indecently assaulted a seven-year-old girl who was asleep in bed at the time.

Senior Sergeant Bowman says the girl was a visitor at the house.

He says forensic evidence has now linked the man to the incident through DNA.

The 30-year-old male will appear in the Christchurch District Court next week on charges in relation to the incident.
