By: Nina Burton | Latest Crime News | Thursday April 19 2012 15:47

A neighbour of the 95-year-old man stabbed in the head by a home intruder had no idea of the attack.

Albert Chant is recovering in hospital after the incident happened at his Glendene address last night.

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court and been remanded in custody until tomorrow morning.

Neighbour Tony Compain describes Mr Chant as a great man who loves his independence and keeps to himself.

He says it's a sad reflection on today's society.

"He's 95-years-old. Who would want to hurt an old man like that? I'm quite angry to be honest."

A 20-year-old man has appeared in the Waitakere District Court after the stabbing.

The man, who has name suppression, is charged with aggravated burglary and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He has been remanded in custody for a further court appearance tomorrow.
