Stiff warning for employers exploiting migrant workers

By: Jacqui Stanford | Business News | Saturday October 27 2012 13:08

Employers who are ripping off or exploiting migrant workers are being given a stiff warning.

It follows an Employment Relations Authority case where an Auckland company made a Chinese woman pay her own wage to support her application for permanent residency.

The Equal Employment Opportunities Trust is aware of other similar allegations, and others of below minimum wage jobs being offered.

General Manager Bev Cassidy-Mackenzie says the Trust and other groups have a a simple goal:

"Raise the awareness and really get some education out there. I'm sure employers are aware that there is somebody watching what is going on."

Bev Cassidy-Mackenzie says all businesses need to respect all employees regardless of their immigration status.
