An urgent summit is being held on Friday by unions, politicians and business leaders, aimed at tackling the country's job and manufacturing crisis. It comes after a long list of redundancies have been announced across the country in the past couple of months, and concerns over a 'trades drain' to Australia. EPMU national secretary Bill Newson says it's a sign of the emerging consensus that the Government needs to take a more active role in the economy. "We're not asking for uncritical investment but we are asking for some intelligent investment to support these manufacturing-exporting employers. Look, they create a lot of jobs and it's those jobs that drive value in our economy and they should be supported." Photo: NZ Herald |
