The Commerce Commission has put 30 tax refund agents on notice for potentially failing to meet their obligations under the Fair Trading Act.
Personal tax summary intermediaries process income tax refunds for salary and wage earners, and are often set up in temporary locations at shopping centres, and over the internet.
The Commission is urging those its contacted to take a good look at their websites and marketing practices, and insist they clearly disclose crucial information about the cost of their services.
Its investigation reveals some may include customer obligations to use their service in future years, without making this clear or how to get out of it, and making misleading claims about turnaround times.
