Concerns agreement with China may risk Kiwi innovation

By: Natasha Burling | Business News | Tuesday May 15 2012 9:11

There's concern New Zealand's ideas and innovations may be at risk following an agreement signed in China.

Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development chief executive Brett O' Riley has signed a Statement of Co-operation with his counterpart from Beijing.

Mayor Len Brown says there's an interest from China in New Zealand intellectual property and capability and partnering with New Zealand firms.

However, Auckland Councillor Dick Quax says he and his fellow councillors don't know anything about the agreement.

"On the face of it it appears to me that Auckland is the loser out of this, it certainly doesn't seem that Auckland will be the winner out of this."

Mr Quax says we are a country of entrepreneurs and innovators so we need to guard our intellectual property like gold.
