Domestic tourism is being seen as a key moneymaker for the New Zealand tourism industry.
The latest AA Mood of the New Zealand Traveller report shows domestic travellers account for 57 percent of the country's total annual tourism spend of 23 billion dollars.
It suggests Kiwis are keen to travel more in New Zealand - but finances continue to be the main barrier, as well as being too busy at work.
The report also reveals Wellington as the destination New Zealanders would most like to visit in the next six months, followed by Queenstown and Auckland respectively.
Tourism Industry Association CEO Grant Lilly says domestic tourism is the industry's banker market.
