Australian market big hope for NZ horticulture

By: Juliette Sivertsen | Business News | Wednesday May 9 2012 9:54

Fruit and vegetables are playing a bigger part in our export market - increasing three percent last year.

Horticultural exports now account for 8 percent of our total exports, meaning the industry's worth about $6.4 billion.

Business Correspondent Roger Kerr says exports to Australia are the industry's big hope for the future.

"Horticultural exports into Australia were just 160 million in the year 2000, 12 years ago, last year they were 756 million and that increase is despite the fact they just got access of apples into the Australian market."

This country's tomato exports to Australia doubled last year to 12 million dollars as a result of the devastating Queensland floods.
