University students vote to allow anti-abortion group

By: Natasha Burling | Latest News | Wednesday July 18 2012 14:09

An anti-abortion group has managed to keep its club status at Auckland University.

Newstalk ZB's Natasha Burling was at Auckland University as the vote took place.

She says there were deafening cheers as the vote was announced. 227 students voted to let Prolife Auckland stay on campus. 125 voted to throw them off and 12 abstained from voting.

There was heated debate before the vote, with some saying the group had spread misinformation in it's pamphlet outlining the health risks of abortion.

Prolife New Zealand spokeswoman Rachel Wong says this is a victory for free speech, for the club and for all other clubs on campus.
