Vet killed by elephant

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest News | Wednesday April 25 2012 18:01

A vet has been killed by an elephant at Franklin Zoo in Tuakau.

Emergency services were called to the scene earlier this afternoon.

According to the zoo's website, it has one elephant called Mila - an African ex circus elephant.

Emergency services were called to the zoo just before five this afternoon,in response to reports there had been an attack.

Fire service shift manager Paul Radden says their crews went to the scene, in case the elephant wasn't secure.

"Upon arrival the elephant had been secured, and the fire service just stood by in the event that they were required. They were released a short time later."

Police say the matter has now been referred to the coroner and they're working to contact next of kin.
