Football: Phoenix could be on the move

The Wellington Phoenix's days at Westpac Stadium may be numbered.

Discussions are underway about the prospect of moving to a much smaller purpose-built venue at either Newtown Park or Petone to enhance the matchday experience.

Former Wellington City Councillor John Morrison, who played a role in keeping the Phoenix alive, has told Newstalk ZB's Tony Veitch the ball is rolling.

"I have seen tentative designs and the reason I think that Gareth and Rob are suggesting maybe Petone because they're dealing with the Hutt City Council, which is a different issue there. But what they want, and you're right, they want to get things done."

The build cost is likely to be around 25 to 30 million dollars for a new or rebuilt stadium.
