Man bites dog, gets hospitalised

By: AAP | Latest News | Sunday December 2 2012 21:25

A 31-year-old man has kicked and attempted to bite a police dog during his arrest but ended up needing stitches to his arm after the German Shepherd retaliated in the Illawarra region south of Sydney.

The man was arrested at Berkeley on Saturday night following reports he had violated a restraining order.

Lake Illawarra Acting Inspector Jack Brown says the the man kicked so hard at the door of the caged police truck that officers thought the truck could not restrain him, so they began moving him to another vehicle.

Acting Insp Brown says the man then kicked out and attempted to bite the dog, with the dog responding.

The injured man was taken to Shellharbour Hospital, where he received stitches to his arm.

Acting Insp Brown says the German Shepherd is doing fine.

The man will appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow on several charges related to damaging property, resisting police, contravening a personal apprehended violence order and committing an act of cruelty to animals.
