Calls for extension to Bill deadline

By: Juliette Sivertsen | Latest News | Friday April 13 2012 12:54

Child Poverty Action Group is calling for an extension to the deadline for the Social Security Amendment Bill.

The group's written an open letter to the Social Development Minister and Chair of Social Services Select Committee.

It claims the Bill needs considerable debate and wider discussion if the aims of an effective welfare system are to be met.

CPAG says the short time period - which is effectively only 11 working days - makes it impossible to contribute adequately.

It says the issues are urgent, complex and critical, and too much haste now could compromise the future options and possibilities for our young people.
