On the first day of Matariki - the Maori New Year - the Maori Party is calling on parliament to officially recognise it as an unique and distinctive part of our country. Co-leader Tariana Turia is drawing up a member's bill to officially recognise Matariki with official celebrations every year. In 2009, she tried to get Matariki made an official public holiday, but the move failed and that is now off the table. Ms Turia says the new bill strengthens the opportunities for all Kiwis to be proud of our cultural foundations and to embrace Matariki. |
