I don’t mean to alarm you, but neither your heater nor those extra-hot showers are doing your skin any favours this winter. You see, the dry winter air already has a tendency to suck your skin (and hair) of moisture. By adding heating appliances into the mix, you’re giving your skin a double dose of dehydration, leaving you looking scaly, tight-skinned and under-plumped. Here, some simple tips to winter-proof your entire body.
Skin-saving Tip No. 1: Apply body lotion to damp skin.
In winter, it’s imperative to apply body lotion to give your skin back the moisture it’s lost during the day. Look for thicker, richer formulas and apply them to slightly damp skin as you leap out of the shower. This ensures easy absorption with as much added moisture as possible.
Skin-saving Tip No. 2: Replace your heater with woolly socks and a rug.
I know it’s tempting, but resist the urge to turn on your heater, air-conditioning or electric blanket. Not only is it better for the environment, but your skin will thank you too. Replace your appliance of choice with a pair of woolen bed socks and cosy into a blanket on the couch. You’ll feel as toasty as ever -- minus the scaly skin.
Skin-saving Tip No. 3: Change your skin care regimen.
Your skin requires more nourishment in winter, as it’s prone to drying out in this weather. As a result, you need to change your skin care products to ensure your skin is getting all the care it needs.
Of course it depends on your skin type, but generally speaking, winter calls for richer face creams, specific night creams and a milky cream cleanser rather than a foaming one. Not sure what’s right for you? If your face feels tight after cleansing, your product is too drying and needs to be replaced with a gentle cream or milk formula instead.
Skin-saving Tip No. 4: Try a hair mask.
All the attention can’t go to your face and body in winter; it’s important to take care of your hair too. Winter is the perfect time to repair some of the damage caused to your hair in summer. Invest in a hair mask and apply it twice a week to rebuild, hydrate and nourish dry ends.
Skin-saving Tip No. 5: Buy an “everything” balm.
If in doubt, buy an “everything” balm. These clever balms can be applied to lips, cracked heels, dry patches of skin and even your cuticles. They’re thick and pasty, and they’re a saviour in winter when you’re caught out in the cold. Pop one in your handbag for quick fixes on the go.
