Senior doctors are unhappy at a scheme which sees some surgeons making more than $6000 for a day's work.
The idea of the plan is to make use of a mothballed operating theatre at Auckland's Waitakere Hospital, attract new staff, and reduce waiting lists.
It involves orthopaedic surgeons, who'd typically replace four or five joints in a day.
But other specialists say it's unfair and unethical.
The senior doctors union says split rates undermine the teamwork which is critical to the safety of patients in a complex public hospital.
