By: Jacqui Stanford | Latest Emergency News | Saturday February 4 2012 16:46

A 73-year-old man has been killed and another critically injured in a crash during a four wheel drive trek in the Ruakituri Valley north of Wairoa.

The man was the passenger in a vehicle which went out of control on a farm track then rolled down a steep 25 metre bank.

Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled.

Rescue Helicopters from Gisborne and Hawke's Bay winched the two men from the scene and flew them to Hawke's Bay Hospital.

One of the men died on the flight.

The other victim, who is also a 73-year-old man, is now in intensive care.

Police and Department of Labour Investigators are at the scene continuing their enquiries.

The crash occurred on a farm on Mangaroa Road and is approximately 1 hours drive from WAIROA.
