Police have recovered the Corrections vehicle a prisoner hot wired and escaped in yesterday.

Jamie Paamu Hughes escaped from Tongariro Rangipo Prison yesterday morning.

It was recovered a few hours later in Taupo.

Police want to hear from anyone who has seen or heard from Hughes, who is a male Maori of slight build, and 160-170cm tall.

He has the name 'Leilani' tattooed on the right side of his neck.

He was last sighted in Taupo wearing black trousers, a black long-sleeved shirt and a blue hoodie.

Hughes was serving a prison sentence at Tongariro Rangipo Prison after being convicted of assaulting his partner in late 2010.
